Thai Craftsmanship at the 61st Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair

The Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), announces its readiness to hold the 61st edition of the Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair (BGJF) under the theme of ‘Heritage & Craftsmanship’, which highlights Thailand’s cultural heritage and the exquisite craftsmanship of Thai artists.

The 61st BGJF is expected to welcome over 20,000 buyers from more than 130 countries across the globe.

DITP Director-General Chantira Jimreivat Vivatrat reveals that the gems and jewelry industry is regarded as one of Thailand’s leading industries and ranked third in exporting industries after automotives and electronics. Exports of gems and jewelry, excluding gold, totalled US$12.841 billion in 2017, or 5.4% of all exports. Moreover, in 2017 Thailand was ranked the world’s 13th largest gems and jewelry exporter. The outlook remains positive as the economies of major trading partners continue to recover.

“The gems and jewelry industry is a key part of the economy by generating nationwide income for approximately 1.2 million artisans and skilled labourers from upstream to downstream,” the DITP Director-General says.

Furthermore, the Thai government has passed a series measures to support businesses in the industry. In 2018, the government aims to increase manufacturing capabilities and create new markets for gems and jewelry products by developing trading channels while promoting the image of Thailand as the world’s gems and jewelry hub, boosting consumer confidence in the quality of its gems and jewelry products.

The 61st Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair, under the theme of ‘Heritage & Craftsmanship’, will highlight Thailand’s cultural heritage expressed in the creation of unique design jewelry that perfectly combines beautiful Thai designs with the demands of international consumers.

“The Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair is a prominent stage that allows Thai designers and artisans to show their jewelry pieces to buyers and visitors from each corner of the world. Moreover, the fair is the perfect opportunity for established manufacturers and SMEs to meet and do business with domestic and international trading partners. This year, over 900 manufacturers, traders and exporters from Thailand and other countries will be exhibiting at over 2,200 booths, with exhibitors from countries such as the US, China, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Sri Lanka and the ASEAN countries,” the DITP Director-General says.

The 60th Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair saw trading value of 1.95 billion Thai baht with 319.57 million of immediate sales and 1,63 billion Thai baht of expected orders within one year.

The 61st Bangkok Gems & Jewelry Fair will take place from February 21 to 25 at Challenger Hall 1-3, IMPACT, Muang Thong Thani. The fair will be open for trade negotiations from February 21 to 23, (10am-6pm) and to the general public on February 24 (10am-6pm) and February 25 (10am-5pm).
